🎃 What a great day at East! Our students had a blast celebrating fall and Halloween with a visit from the high school drum line, classroom parties, themed activities, special games in PE, and our Spooktacular Glow Party!
Special thanks to our student senate for their work on the glow party and all of the teachers and staff who went the extra mile to keep the fun coming! ✨
Big smiles, bright colors, and lots of fun filled the day — a perfect way to wrap up October! 🎃

A big thank you to the Philo Fire Protection District for joining us today to certify our fire drill and talk with our K/1 students. Firefighters shared important safety tips and gave students a close-up look at the fire truck and gear. We’re grateful for all they do to serve our community !
For Fire Safety Week, we are encouraging everyone to:
✅ Talk with your family about your fire escape plan — know how to get out and where to meet.
✅ Check the smoke alarms in your home to be sure they’re working.
✅ Remember: Never play with matches or lighters!

This month, our intermediate students took learning on the road!
Our 5th graders embraced the great outdoors at Homer Lake for an adventure-filled survival program inspired by a book they recently read in class - Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
Meanwhile, our 4th graders stepped into the real world at the Champaign County Courthouse, getting a firsthand look at the judicial system.
A huge thank you to our amazing teachers and PTO for making these unforgettable experiences possible!

Congratulations to all the East students who completed their summer packets! This year, we had a record number of participants—more than half the school—put in the extra effort to keep their reading and math skills sharp over break!
Today, we celebrated their hard work with an epic reward party featuring pizza, ice cream, and an extra-long recess on a beautiful day!
Great job, students—we’re proud of your commitment to learning and growing. And a big thank you to the parents for supporting your learners along the way!

A round of applause to our 5th grade for a terrific Wax Museum last week! Students in Mrs. Lemke and Ms. Bagwell's classrooms worked hard for weeks researching and preparing to get into character as their historical figures. Great job, 5th grade!

Earlier this week, two of our dedicated volunteers, Dan and Marla James, were recognized by the Unity Education Association as Friends of Education. We’re excited to celebrate the incredible contributions they’ve made to our students and school community!
Marla James has been involved in the Unit Seven school district for many years. Marla taught with us for 24 years. She was a special education teacher working in all five elementary schools. She taught kindergarten, first, and second grade at Tolono and Sidney Elementary schools. Then, she switched to Unity East once the towns consolidated the primary schools into Unity East and Unity West.
Since retiring, Marla and her husband, Dan, have volunteered in the primary wing at Unity East every week. Dan and Marla help first and second-grade students with their reading, writing, and math skills. They also play games with students to work on building good sportsmanship skills and strategies.
The Jameses have built a great rapport with Unity East’s students, faculty, and staff! They are willing to help in any way they can. Unity East has been blessed to have these two individuals care deeply about our students and staff. We are grateful for your acts of service!
